Skill Level: Basic embroidery skills are very helpful. Please note: This class will be a challenge for the beginning embroidress but any student is welcome.
In the Madeira Islands where nature’s beauty inspires artists of all kinds some of the most exquisite embroideries in the world are born. Skilled hands using the finest fabrics, threads and a palette of stitches produce stunning handcrafted pieces like the hand towel you will work on in class.
Using the same fabrics and threads (while working from the Madeira glossary of embroidery stitches) we will master the following techniques during our class time:
- Granito
- Backstitch
- Satin stitch
- Closed blanket stitch edging
- Madeira appliqué (pin stitch)
You will learn the steps involved to create these stitches along with several helpful hints for perfecting your work. Exercises for each will be provided along with comprehensive handouts to guide you through your stitching journey! No machine construction is required.
