In early stitching books and journals the joining together of two separate pieces of fabric is referred to as bridging or insertion work. This technique involves two finished fabric edges that are basted onto a stabilizing surface (usually paper) with a space left between. The space is then embellished with decorative stitching that binds the edges of the two pieces together as one. Today this type of work is referred to as “faggoting”.
In this faggoting notebook class, you will explore some of the basic faggoting stitches and how they can be applied to your stitching projects. You will practice these stitches on straight, curved and irregular shapes. You will also learn ways to finish fabric edges so you can apply faggoting to your own projects.
Specific stitches and techniques learned in class are:
- Basic insertion stitch
- Blanket insertion stitch
- Faggoting along a straight edge
- Faggoting along a curved edge (such as a collar)
- How to create a bound edge for faggoting
- How to finish your fabric edges for scalloped faggoting
- How to set up and stitch free form shapes
